When people from all across East Texas move to Mount Vernon to have their chilrden attend our schools, you know that we have something special. Prestegious staff, thriving athletic programs, and smaller class sizes are just a few of the things you can expect at MVISD. Additionally, Northeast Texas Community College is only 20 miles away and offers dozens of vocational program. 

The downtown area reflects a small-town atmosphere. On the north side of the square is a classical revival 1912 white limestone courthouse with a chiming clock tower. But want to know an insider tip? Our downtown Square has a collection of some of the coolest and quirkiest businesses around! Be sure to visit ML Edwards, Chophouse on Bankhead, Steve-O's Pizza & Pub, and all of our fantastic downtown restaraunts. We also have the only raised plaza in the state of Texas, which takes center stage during community events and festivals. 

History abounds in and around Mount Vernon. Over 50 homes built before World War I still stand around town and are marked with signs designating the original owners and year of construction. There are over 20 official state historical markers in Franklin County. The Cherokee Trace runs along the eastern edge of the county south toward Nacogdoches, the Choctaw Trail runs through the county toward Dallas, and the Bankhead Highway remains as Mount Vernon's Main Street.
